Color laser printers hold four cartridges — black, cyan, magenta, yellow — and they empty at different rates. In most offices black goes first, by a wide margin. So the answer to "replace one or all?" is: replace the one that is low, unless you have a reason to want them synchronized. Here is how to decide and how to keep the set balanced.
How the four cartridges are used
- Black prints text and is used in most graphics for shadows and outlines. Typical office ratio: black uses 3–4 times the pages of any single color.
- Cyan, magenta, yellow are used in color graphics and, importantly, in "composite black" when a driver renders black from CMY, and in the printer's periodic color calibration.
Because of the calibration cycles, color cartridges are consumed slowly even if you only print black, which is why a color printer left idle for a year can report low cyan with no color pages printed.
Replace one cartridge
When one color reads low, buy that single. Example: a HP 206A cyan for a Color LaserJet Pro M255/M283, or a 414A cyan for the M454/M479. Install it, print the printer's color calibration page (HP: Print Quality > Calibrate; Canon: Adjustment > Auto Adjust Gradation) and carry on. There is no benefit to replacing colors that are not low.
When a full set makes sense
- Levels are all below about 20% — one order, one delivery, one calibration.
- You print a lot of color and want to buy once or twice a year. A set such as the HP 206A CMYK 4-pack or Canon 045 4-pack is priced below four singles.
- Color balance has drifted (a cast that calibration does not fix) because one cartridge is old and the others new; a fresh set resets everything.
The common pattern and the smart order
Because black runs out first, the typical office buys: black singles (or a black 2-pack) as needed, plus a CMY 3-pack roughly every second or third black cycle. That keeps the colors aligned and avoids paying for a black cartridge inside a 4-pack when black is not the one that is low.
Keep the colors balanced
- Set the driver's default to grayscale for everyday printing; choose color per job. This is the biggest saver and prevents "composite black".
- Turn off any "always calibrate on power-up" option if your printer has it, or leave the printer on standby instead of powering off daily; each calibration uses a little of all four colors.
- Keep one spare black on the shelf; order color when the first color drops below 20%.
Do not mix generations or regions
All four cartridges should be the same generation (all A or all X is not required — you can run a 414X black with 414A colors — but they must be the same family for the printer and the same region). Mixing a regional cartridge from another market produces a cartridge error.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to replace all four toner cartridges at once?
No. Each color is a separate cartridge and the printer tracks each one. Replace only the cartridge that is low. The other three keep their remaining pages.
Why does my color printer say a color is empty when I only print black?
Color printers use small amounts of color for calibration and for 'rich black' in graphics; and if the driver is not set to grayscale, black text can be rendered from all four colors. Set the driver to grayscale for text jobs.
When is a multipack worth it?
When the colors are within a few hundred pages of each other, when you want one order per year instead of four, or when the pack price is meaningfully lower than four singles. If black runs out three times as fast as color, buy black singles and a CMY 3-pack.
