You replaced the cartridge, closed the door and the panel still says "Install cartridge", shows 0%, or throws a cartridge error. Nine times out of ten the fix takes under two minutes. Work down this list.
1. Reseat it firmly
Pull the cartridge out and slide it back in along the guide rails until it stops with a click. Many HP LaserJet Pro cartridges (the 410A family, for example) sit in a drawer that must be pushed fully home before the door closes; the door closing does not seat the cartridge. Close the door slowly and wait for the printer to run its supply check — 10 to 30 seconds.
2. Remove every piece of packaging
Check for: orange clips on the ends, a plastic strip covering the drum, a foam block, a pull tab on the toner seal (older cartridges), and a sticker over the chip. Canon 054/055 and 045/046 cartridges ship with an orange drum cover that must be removed. HP cartridges often have a strip of tape over the chip contact for shipping. A missed piece either blocks the drum shutter or covers the chip, and both look like "not recognized".
3. Clean the chip contacts
Find the small gold contact pad on the cartridge and the matching spring contacts in the printer. Wipe both with a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use liquids or erasers. Fingerprints and toner dust on the pad are enough to cause a misread.
4. Check the part number and region
Compare the number on the cartridge to the number on the printer's cartridge door label or supplies page. A CF500A (202A) and a CF400A (201A) look identical but fit different printers; a European or Asian regional version of the same cartridge is rejected by a US printer. If the number is right but the printer still refuses it, see our guide on the "non-HP cartridge" message.
5. Power cycle
Turn the printer off at its own power button (not just the strip), wait 30 seconds, turn it on. The supplies check runs again at boot and clears a stale status from the old cartridge.
6. Color printers: right slot, right order
Each color slot is keyed, but a cartridge forced with enough pressure can jam in the wrong one. Pull all four out, confirm the color label on each, and reinstall in the order marked inside the door. On HP Color LaserJet Pro M254/M283 and Canon imageCLASS MF640-series the black cartridge is a different size and only fits its own slot; if the tray does not slide back fully, one cartridge is in the wrong position.
7. Update firmware, then test with the old cartridge
If nothing above helps, put the old cartridge back. If the old one is recognized and the new one is not, the new cartridge is faulty or not what it was sold as — check the security label and contact the seller. If neither is recognized, the printer's contact springs or the cartridge sensor have failed; that is a service call. Updating firmware (HP Smart app, Canon's support site) fixes a handful of known cartridge-detection bugs on older models.
A note on drums and toner on separate-drum printers
On HP LaserJet Pro M102/M130/M203/M227 and M107/M135 the printer expects both a toner cartridge and a drum unit. A "cartridge not recognized" error can be the drum, not the toner, especially after the drum's rated life. Check both parts — the printer cartridge finder lists which drum goes with which toner.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my printer not recognize the new toner cartridge?
Usually the cartridge is not fully seated, a packaging clip or tape is still on it, the chip contacts are dirty, or it is the wrong part number for the model. Power cycling after reseating resolves most cases.
Do I need to reset the printer after installing toner?
No reset is needed for a genuine cartridge; the printer reads the chip automatically. If the level does not update, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds and turn it on.
Can the wrong color slot cause a cartridge error?
Yes on color printers. Each color has a keyed slot; a cartridge forced into the wrong slot triggers a cartridge error. Match the color label on the cartridge to the slot.
